2011 Gig Photos
This was a fun night of original music with Josh Cole's quintet at El Barrio. With Josh Cole (bass), Skye Brooks (drums), and Ron Samworth (guitar) and Caleb Chan (violin).
OK, so this wasn't a gig but it was a great experience to record in one of Vancouver's best studios. Oddity was fortunate to record a really nice demo at the Warehouse Studio in Gastown. Special thanks to engineer/mixer Eric Mosher for all of his hard work on the project.
On November 18th and 19th, Kate Hammett-Vaughan's quintet performed the music of (and associated with) jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan at the Jazz Cellar.
Oddity back for another night of tunes at El Barrio. With long time friends and sessioneers Tommy Babin (bass), Bernie Arai (drums), and Andre Lachance (guitar).
Three nights of standards in November 2011 at O'Doul's with two outstanding musicians, Bill Coon (guitar) and Adam Thomas (bass).

At the Jazz Cellar with Chris Gestrin (B3 organ) and Jesse Cahill (drums) for the Tuesday night B3 Beatdown.
Playing soundscapes at 1067 with Chris Gestrin (keyboards), and Bernie Arai (drums).
What a thrill it was to play with Barney Bentall and Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) after they completed the GranFondo bike race from Vancouver to Whistler. I grew up listening to these guys, so to play some of their hits with them was pretty cool.
Another fun standards gig with Adam Thomas and Sharon Minemoto.
In August UGETSU +4 presented two nights of music celebrating Thelonious Monk. It was a rare chance to see a large 10 piece ensemble performing in the intimate setting of the Jazz Cellar.
It was so great to play with the absolutely killing baritone saxophonist Chad Makela and his quartet. It's a great group featuring Sean Cronin (bass) and Jesse Cahill (drums).
Playing standards with Darren Radtke (bass) and Bill Coon (guitar) is always fun and a challenge.
A fun gig featuring Sharon Minemoto (piano), Adam Thomas (bass) and Bernie Arai (drums) at El Barrio.
Wow. After a long hiatus, I made a return to playing with the Famous Players Band. Great musicians who are excellent at entertaining people.
Luis Giraldo is an excellent singer and piano player with a great feel, so it makes gigs like these not even feel like work. It was also great to play with bassist Laurence Mollerup again, it had been a while.
Here was a fun and challenging gig playing with a really interesting group called Birds of Paradox. They mix many different styles of music to create their own strain. We played out in Coquitlam for the Music in the Park series with Ron Samworth (guitar), Neelamjit Dhillon (tabla, alto saxophone, and flute), and Lan Tung (erhu).
Also on Saturday July 2nd was Wilson/ Lee/ Bentley at Ironworks. Part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, I had a blast at this one. In my opinion Ironworks is one of the best venues for live acoustic music in Vancouver. With Pegy Lee (cello) and Tony Wilson (guitar).
On Saturday July 2nd I played with Kate Hammett-Vaughan's great quintet as part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. At Performance Works on Granville Island with Andre Lachance (bass), Chris Gestrin (piano), and Tom Foster (drums).
One of my favorite bands ever, I still can't believe I get to play in it! This gig was part of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival at Performance Works on Granville Island. Peggy Lee (cello), Dylan van der Schyff (drums), Andre Lachance (bass), Jesse Zubot (violin), Jeremy Berkman (trombone), Ron Samworth (guitar), and Tony Wilson (guitar).
This was our yearly Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival gig at Vanier Park. I always love playing standards with with Darren Radtke (bass) and Chris Sigerson (piano).
This was a workshop of some new music by Peggy Lee called Absolute Fleadom. 3 actors and 5 musicians playing some fantastic music. Too bad for me I was only subbing for JP Carter! With Dylan van der Schyff (drums) Ron Samworth (guitar), Peggy Lee (cello and piano), Jesse Zubot (violin).
This was a really fun trio gig, I'm pretty fortunate to get to play with these guys: Andre Lachance (bass) and Brad Turner (drums) at El Barrio
This gig was cancelled! Unfortunately due to the conflict with the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins playing in game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals, the Cellar was closed.
An Oddity gig at Goldie's with Tommy Babin (bass), Bernie Arai (drums), Andre Lachance (guitar). Playing in odd meters with a gut full of pizza.
This was another gig with Dylan van der Schyff (drums) and Andre Lachance (bass) at the Prophouse Cafe. A great sounding room and lots of vintage props make for an interesting back drop.
Yet another duo gig playing standards with pianist Paul Keeling out at the University of British Columbia. Thanks for the gigs Paul!
Playing standards with Bill Coon (guitar) and Sharon Minemoto (piano) at O'Doul's. A hard instrumentation to pull off, but we settled into it by the second set and really enjoyed ourselves.
Another fun duo gig playing standards with pianist Paul Keeling. Talk about chord substitutions!
A mid-April gig playing standards with Andre Lachance (bass) and Sharon Minemoto (piano) at O'Doul's. Challenging tunes in hard keys. B Major is rough!
Myself, Dylan van der Schyff (drums) and Andre Lachance (bass) at the Prophouse Cafe. It was the first gig in a new room for jazz groups, and we had a great time playing in this very cool space.
Luis Giraldo is a great jazz singer and piano/keyboard player, so it's always fun to play a gig with him. It was also great to see and play with Tim Stacey on bass again, it had been a while and he is a fantastic bass player. Nino DiPasquale rounded out the group on drums.
This was a nice little gig playing standards with pianist Paul Keeling out at UBC. What a treat it was to play with such a great player and to reminisce about the fantastic duo recording People Time (Stan Getz & Kenny Barron).
March 2011, returning to our roots with Sharon Minemoto's quartet at Capilano University in North Vancouver. All of the band members went to cap at the same time many years ago: Adam Thomas (bass), Sharon Minemoto (piano), and Bernie Arai (drums). This gig brought back a lot of great memories!
March, 2011 SignalFest Vancouver live at CBC presented by Drip Audio and The Signal on CBC Radio 2. This was a fantastic event thanks to the tireless work of Jesse Zubot, Laurie Brown, Andy Sheppard, and many others. With so many great musicians participating, I was excited and honoured to be a part of it.
Darren Radtke, Andre Lachance, and myself playing standards in tuxes. These two guys play both the bass and the guitar amazingly well.

On January 16th, I played with Sharon Minemoto's new quartet at St Andrew's Wesley for Jazz Vespers. The other band members included Darren Radtke (bass), Sharon Minemoto (piano), and Bernie Arai (drums).
